What is Cosmetic Dentistry?
What Are the Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry?
Cosmetic dentistry treatments and services provide restorative benefits ranging from simple restorative treatment such as replacing old silver fillings with tooth-colored fillings to Crowns and Veneers covering the tooth or teeth with beautiful natural looking porcelain.
An example would be the case of simple dental fillings. In past years, dental fillings were made of gold, amalgam and other materials that leave dark spots on the teeth.
Today, we can use fillings materials that match the color of your natural teeth so dental fillings fall under the category of cosmetic dentistry.
Cosmetic Dental Procedures:
- Teeth whitening
- Smile makeover
- Crowns & bridges
- Veneers
- Implants
- Tooth-colored fillings
Composite Bonding
The procedure is used in many cases for teeth that have minor chips, is decayed or discolored. The composite material (looking like enamel to blend with the patient’s natural teeth color) is applied into the cavity, sculpted and shaped into place, and hardened by a curing light. Bonding restores the tooth back to its initial beauty.
Teeth Whitening
This is one of the most common cosmetic dental services availed of today. Teeth stained from smoking, food and colored drinks or poor oral hygiene are treated by whitening either in-office 1 hour ZOOM whitening or with our at home whitening system. Teeth whitening enhances one’s smile easily and quickly.
At home whitening trays can be made in office from an impression taken of the teeth and can be used nightly with a syringe of professional whitening bleach to achieve an optimal shade.
Call us to make an appointment and we can check your initial teeth shade, take the impression mold, and have you whitening at home the next day!
Smile Makeover
A Smile Makeover is a comprehensive assessment in the aesthetics of your smile (crooked, missing teeth, lopsided, etc.) and the procedures to improve its overall appearance. This may take several cosmetic dentistry procedures but a complete makeover makes a beautiful smile.
These procedures can include dental veneers, implants, gingival (gums) sculpting, teeth whitening and other procedures on both lower and upper dental arches to restore or remake your smile.
If you are tired of hiding your smile, call us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Powless and bring a picture of smiles you like or the one you once had. You and the doctor will review and choose the type of smile you want including shade, shape and size. Together we can help you reach and achieve your goal.
Crown and Bridges
Crowns/Bridges, also known as “caps” are gold or porcelain tooth-shaped covering on existing tooth or in place of missing tooth in a bridge. After an impression of the tooth is taken, a crown, or units on a bridge can be made by the laboratory, matching the shade, shape and size to your natural teeth.
When a tooth is:
- fractured
- has a large restoration
- has a leaky old filling
- cracked or broken
- had the nerve removed with root canal therapy
- is severely damaged by decay
the placement of a crown (or cap) may be recommended. A build up or post-core build ups may be required for stability, strength and fitting purposes to replace lost tooth structure before capping the tooth. Crowns strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and can improve the appearance of your smile.
Types of crowns include:
- Emax crown
- Zirconia
- Full Porcelain
- Full Gold
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal crown
- all-metal crown and stainless steel crowns for Pediatric patients.
Crowns go on individual teeth or implants. Bridges include crown units called Retainers that are connected to surrounding crowns to replace a missing tooth.
Veneers
These are laminates made of composites or porcelain that are bonded to the surface of the tooth to correct and repair chips, cracks, worn appearance or severe teeth discoloration.
In some cases they are administered to correct gaps in the teeth, or dark surfaces not corrected by teeth whitening. Minimum reduction of the tooth is required for Veneers. They can transform your current smile to one that is beautiful and the shade you desire.
Implants
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that provide a permanent base for fixed, (re)placement teeth. Compatible with dentures, bridges, and crowns, dental implants are a popular and effective long-term solution for people who suffer from missing teeth, failing teeth, or chronic dental problems. Because they fit, feel and function like natural teeth, dental implants have quickly become the “new standard” of care for tooth replacement.
You can use dental implants to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or a full upper and/or lower arch of teeth. If you need to restore a full arch, you may be a perfect candidate for the all-on-four treatment. Dr Powless insists on keeping implants as affordable as possible because he believes in implant treatment for quality lifetime dentistry. Implants increase treatment options and together Dr Powless and you find the option that best fits your smile and dental goal.
