An Introduction to Dental Implant Procedures in Davis Island – South Tampa

The dental implant procedure involves the placement of a titanium implant and then attachment of a crown or denture once the jaw bone has fused to the implant, securing it in place.

The methods of achieving this are varied, according to the condition of the implant site.

If a tooth is broken or is decayed and needs to be removed, as long as the surrounding gum and bone is healthy, the implant may be placed on the same day as the  tooth is extracted. An implant takes place in stages. At the first appointment, the implant is placed into the jawbone and left to fuse for usually 4 months, under the gums. After this time, the implant is uncovered and a post, called an abutment, is placed on the implant. Casts are then taken of the teeth and a crown or an impression for a denture is taken. The crown is made to match the existing teeth and is cemented or screwed onto the abutment.

Sometimes to place a dental implant  a bone graft may be required. In this case, the tooth is extracted and the bone graft is placed to preserve or increase the bone site in preparation for the implant.
